“Not everyone is worthy to be here” or “not recommended for faint-hearted kids” are just a few of the statements associated with these places. Military boot camps for youth have become a growing trend in Spain. Inspired by models from the U.S. and Central and Eastern Europe, these camps began appearing in the late 2000s, and today there are over a dozen across the country.

At these camps, young people between the ages of 8 and 21 are subjected to a strict regime of military discipline, isolation, and intense physical and psychological activities. Participants are also taught nationalistic lessons on Spain’s history and are expected to revere the national symbols.

Experts have criticized these camps and their methods, arguing that they are outdated, dangerous, and promote ultranationalism, militarism, and historical revisionism.
