The Brigades sub-plot
2024 Since 2017, groups of people close to the Spanish far-right have been engaged in a struggle for control of public space in Catalonia. Using the defense of the law and the neutrality of the space as an excuse, these groups take to the streets to eliminate symbols that contradict their values. They call themselves "Brigades" and emerged during the height of the independence process.

“M”, “T” and “E” are part of one of these groups, the trio spend the nights ‘cleaning’ the steets not only of pro-independence symbols, but also of anti-fascist and left-wing imagery. They are well organized: pseudonyms, rental cars, warehouse, and thousands of euros’ worth of gear.

There is not political nature behind their activity according to them, but their group is frequently seen in VOX rallies, some of their associates are even part of neo-nazi groups. While they insist they are merely upholding the law, in a single night they can damage public property across multiple towns. I spend a night with them, exploring their activity first hand, and the many contradictions behind what in reality is: a politically motivaded act.
